Taking a convo off Bumble, Hinge, Tinder, or whatever app you met your soulmate on is often the beginning of something exciting. The text messages that follow are a treasure trove of early flirtation, awkward jokes, baring your souls, and realizing you might actually be falling for them even though you haven’t met IRL yet.
Digital nostalgia is real.
That’s how I met my “The One”—Jeanine. I swiped right and felt my heart twist with relief when she also did. That was weird. I wasn’t accustomed to such a reaction. But when we had our first text chat and it lasted until 2:00 AM, I was pretty sure it was the beginning of something epic. I didn’t tell her—of course not! But, months later, I would discover she felt the same. It really was love at first sight—or love at first texts.
Dating app stories
I called up a few friends who had all met their better halves on dating apps, and I asked them what I could get Jeanine for our two-year anniversary. One of them told me about Keepster Message books. I immediately loved the idea.
Those text messages we shared are gold.
I’m not a DIY guy. I’m the type of guy who sees something and buys it. But two years is a big milestone, and I think—no, I know—I’m ready to take the next step. I want to spend the rest of my life with Jeanine. And I thought of no better way of popping the question than by showing her where we came from—in a book of our most beautiful text exchanges.
I didn’t do it alone. I am surrounded by couples who had all met on dating apps. Kevin and Charlie tied the knot last year. Melissa and Marty met IRL just a month ago, but already I see the signs of swoon-worthy love in their eyes. Louise—one of my dearest friends—met her bride-to-be four months ago and they are steaming ahead with wedding plans. These are the pros, so I asked them to help me pick some of the messages for the book.
Here are a few of the gems we picked:
Planning the first date
Jeanine: Okay, I will tell you officially that I have several secret agents in place to observe our first encounter.
Me: Noted. I’ll be on my best behavior. 🤞
J: It’s just in case you’re an ax-murderer. 🪓
Me: Copy that. And we have all the bases covered. Public space. ✅ Agents in place. ✅ Send a copy of my photo to the local cop station? 👮
J: Great idea. Can you send me one?
Me: I’ll send you my mugshot from when I robbed that liquor store. 😂
J: I have that one already. Pulled it off Facebook. I was hoping for something more flattering. Like that time you got all dolled up and then got caught with that lady on a street corner? 😉😜
Me: Oh, you’re good
Me: Srsly tho, we don’t need to meet IRL yet.
Me: I mean it I know you’ve been through a lot
Me: I know this is a BIG step for you
J: Yeah. Appreciate it. J: Btw also appreciate you waited for me to ask you out first!
J: FTR, I really do want to meet you.
J: Like...really! Otherwise I wouldn’t have asked.
Me: More like demanded.
J: Yeah, well I’m a sucker for romance.
Me: FTR, I also want to meet you. More than anyone I’ve ever wanted to meet in my entire life. 😳
J: Well. That moved fast. 💋
Me: Yeah. What did the secret agents think?
J: Lol no agents, thank goodness. They would’ve never stopped ragging me. You kiss...incredibly. 😍
Me: It takes two to tango. My legs are still shaking
J: Pity we were in a public place.. 🙄🤪
Me: J! Hey what?? Is this the same nervous, shaky woman I’ve been texting with for three weeks.
J: Nope. Now I know you’re definitely not an ax-murderer. I’ve got my eyes on you now. So…….my place next time?
Me: You said you wanted to take things slow?
J: Hah! You’ve unleashed my inner extrovert. I’ll cook. You bring the wine. Or not. So long as you bring your lips.
Texts to friends—“She’s the one!”
Me: I’m screwed.
Me: I’ve met the most incredible woman, and I’m terrified.
L: So, I take it the first date went well?
Me: We kissed for almost an hour behind a tree like teenagers!!
L: Thought you said she had a firm no-touch policy on the first date.
Me: She made the first move!. Now she wants me to have dinner at her place.
L: That’s a big step for you. Are you ready?
Me: A big step for us both. I think we obliterate each other’s fears.
L: Jeez. That’s so romantic. Can I be your best man? 💒
Excuses... to get together
J: I haven’t watched Friends in six months. Wanna binge-watch it tonight and stay over?
Me: I hate Friends.
J: K. Wanna stay over anyway? 😁
Me: I happen to be in the same State as you today. Wanna go out?
J: Whaaaat? We live in the same city!
Me: So That’s a yes?
J: It’s Thursday. Wanna hang out?
Me: What does that have to do with it being Thursday?
J: Nothing. Wanna hang out?
Me: I’m already a block away! No excuse needed 😁🤦♂️
Baring our souls—the L-word
J: I never thought I could get this close to someone again.
Me: ooh baby ditto.
J: Forget my history. I’m jumping in the deep end with you.
Me: Hope you can swim ‘cause I’m there with you.
J: what I’m really trying to say is … God, this is difficult.
Me: I love you. I am so deeply, madly, crazily in love with you.
Me: There I frickin’ said it!
J: Okay, now I’m crying. 😭😭 I want to hear you whisper that into my ear. And I also love you, too. I love you beyond what words can express.
Me: I’m on my way over to do some heavy whispering.
“Will you marry me?” book in hand.
There were other texts that I’d never share with my mates. Deep expressions of our love for each other, and way more intimate things between us. Of course, I’ll put them all in the book too, especially the one that says, “I want to kiss you all over, forever, every day, every hour, eternally.”
And then I’ll get down on one knee and ask her to marry me. And, yes, Louise is totally gonna be my best man.
I am so grateful that I can memorialize whatever I pick and choose, from the life-changing to the cutest moments of our relationship, in a Keepster Message Book. Knowing her as intimately as I do, I know it will mean to her as much as it means to me. Nothing could be more of a slam-dunk, and perfect for the woman that I swiped right on.
